Chapter 13

Fireflies

At dark, the three of us and Starsky pile into the Camaro. Andrew and I decide to head over to the house. I know our house is an empty shell, but it’s a place that holds memories for the three of us. Emily may choose to go there. Another choice would be Emily's old house, but we haven’t been back there since the early days of the apocalypse. Because both houses are close to each other, we can easily sweep the area to look for her. Besides, there are other supplies Emily and I left behind when we went back and found Starsky. So, if Emily isn’t here, we can get the rest of the items from the garage.

I make the headlights of the Camaro go dark about a block away. With the Camaro crawling through the street towards the cul-de-sac, the three of us search out of the windows looking for any signs of Emily. There’s nothing but a few stray Feasters. I turn the car around so it’s facing away from the cul-de-sac in case we need to make a quick getaway.

We exit the car and walk up to the house without making a sound. By looking at Andrew’s face, I can tell he’s feeling what Emily and I were feeling when we first saw the charred remains of our home. He looks down at Starsky and clicks his tongue, sending Starsky to sniff around.

“What’s he doing?” I ask Andrew as I watch Starsky, his nose to the ground.

“He’s just checking if Emily was here.”

“Man, that’s a cool power.”

“It’s good, and I think I’m getting better at controlling it.” Starsky stops by the melted mess of Feasters on the front lawn. He circles and then sits down, pawing at the air. “He’s found something.”

“More Feasters?” Carissa wonders, fear causing any attempt at bravery in her voice to waver.

“I don’t think so,” Andrew responds.

It’s then that Carissa gets a good look at what used to be our home. “Are... are we responsible for this? My father and me?”

I gaze upon the charred home, my lips pursing together. “More or less. It wasn’t burning when you left.”

“But how?”

“That’s not important right now.” My focus shifts to Starsky. Andrew is at his side. “What is it?”

“Emily was here, but I don’t know if it’s an old odor Starsky smells or something fresh. Let’s head inside.”

“You sure you want to? It’s not pretty in there,” I remind Andrew.

“It ain’t pretty out here either. We’ve got to see if she was here. Any kind of clue.”

We head past the mound of melted Feasters on the lawn. By now the smoldering has stopped, and stench replaces it, forcing us to cover our faces to escape the smell. Their groans grow more excited as we pass. Even Starsky takes a wide pass around them.

We cross the threshold into the house. Carissa pulls out three battery powered lanterns and sets them on remnants of a table that survived the fire. The three of us look
